Why we need big history today

We live at a turning point in the history of planet earth.  Never, in 4 billion years, has a single species had so much information and so much power that its actions will dominate change in the biosphere over many thousands, even millions, of years.  We humans stumbled on the role of “planetary managers” just in the last 50 years, during the “Great Acceleration” of the late twentieth century.[1] Our collective task now is to use this extraordinary power to ensure a flourishing future for our descendants and for the biosphere on which they will depend.

Remarkably, modern educational institutions throughout the world fail to teach young people about the huge and daunting challenges that their generation will face. This is because modern education is fractured into distinct disciplines, none of which has a wide enough vision to grasp the significance of the present moment. To understand the nature of the challenges we face as a species, we will need a much broader vision of our past, one that embraces not just human history as a whole, but also the history of the biosphere, of the climate and of the earth as a whole. Only at scales of billions of years, and within a genuinely inter-disciplinary framework, is it possible to see clearly the fundamental significance of the present moment in the history of humanity and the biosphere.

Big History provides the breadth of scale and the inter-disciplinary reach that young people will need in order to see clearly the challenges they will face in the next fifty years.[2] Big History offers a modern, science-based “origin story” that places human history within the larger history of planet earth, and alongside the histories of millions of other species with whom we share our home planet.  By doing so, big history can help us see what makes our species, Homo sapiens, so unique and so astonishingly powerful.  We are, it seems, the first species in four billion years that can share information with such precision and on such a scale, that information about our surroundings has accumulated across generations.  Over 200,000 years, we have accumulated more and more understanding of the world around us, at an accelerating pace, until, today, in the age of the internet, we are accumulating information at warp speed.  And we now dominate change on planet earth.  What we do in the next fifty years will shape the future of the oceans, of the climate, of much of the earth’s surface, and of millions of other species.

But do we really understand our power, and the dangers and opportunities it offers us in the next 100 years?  That is the task before us.  We need to see clearly the moment we have arrived at.  And we need to ensure that our power is used, not to degrade the biosphere and darken the lives of future generations of humans and other species, but to build a world in which our own descendants can flourish live in a sustainable relationship with millions of other species.  The colossal scale and importance of these challenges require a correspondingly bold vision and that is the vision provided by big history.  That is why we need to teach big history to the young people who will be tackling these colossal challenges in the next few decades.
